Maid of the mist

The Maid of the Mist has been providing excursions to the base of the Horseshoe Falls for over 150 years. The trip is a definite must for anyone visiting the area.

Water rushes all around as you "soak" in the excitement and explore the roar of the Falls.  A historical ride aboard the world-famous Maid of the Mist is a half hour thrill of a lifetime!

When you get to the dock, they will provide a blue "Maid of the Mist" plastic poncho. We passed by the American and Bridal Veil falls and headed toward the Horseshoe Falls. If you look to the right, you can see the older Hydro plant carved into the side of the river bank. As you approach the base of the Falls, you get a sense of the full power of the Niagara River.  The opportunities for photography are a bit limited because any cameras will be getting soaked.

The Maid of the Mist leaves from the Observation Bridge on the American side and follows the same route as the Canadian boats.

Sky view Falls trip

As the helicopter gently lifts off from our Victoria Avenue location, the awe-inspiring views of the Niagara Region begin to appear below. We wouldn't want any picture-taking opportunity to be missed so cameras should be ready to go right from the start!

Beginning with the Sir Adam Beck Generating plant and the Niagara Parks Commission School of Horticulture, the tour follows the Niagara River from the Whirlpool area (look for the Spanish Aero Car crossing the gorge), over the Whirlpool Rapids and the Rainbow Bridge. The green grass and floral beauty of Queen Victoria Park stretches below as the helicopter passes by the American Falls and the Skylon Tower. Just when it looks as if you may reach the Minolta Tower, the helicopter begins to change direction as if following the curve of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls! Rainbows appear and disappear from all directions. The helicopter begins to level off and continue along the route back to base.
